Pressure Point

Pressure Point

“Who said of his father and mother, ‘I no longer recognize them.’ He turned his back on his brothers and neglected his children, because he was guarding Your sayings and watching over Your covenant.” (Deuteronomy 33:9)

In this passage, Moses speaks of the tribe of Levi and their uncompromising loyalty to God. Their devotion was so absolute that even the strongest natural ties—father, mother, brothers, and children—were placed second to obedience to God. This was not a rejection of family out of hatred, but a conscious choice to honor God’s covenant above every other allegiance.

This truth finds a clear echo in the words of Jesus:
“If you prefer father or mother over me, you don’t deserve me… If you don’t go all the way with me, through thick and thin, you don’t deserve me… If you forget about yourself and look to me, you’ll find both yourself and me.” (Matthew 10:37–39)

Here lies the pressure point of discipleship. Self-interest is natural and legitimate, yet Christ calls us beyond it—to self-denial, to surrender, to a life where God comes first. At this pressure point, we are stripped of self-sufficiency and personal priority until what remains is wholehearted devotion to God.

Putting God and others first is not weakness; it is humility. It is learning to take the back seat, to serve, to yield. And the question, “For how long?” is answered simply by Jesus: until, in losing yourself, you truly find yourself in Him.

Brief Reflection

What areas of my life am I still holding tighter than God? True discipleship presses us to choose God even when it costs comfort, recognition, or personal gain. Yet the promise remains: surrender leads not to loss, but to true discovery.

Prayer

Lord, help me to release every misplaced priority and choose You above all else. Teach me the grace of self-denial and the humility to put You and others first. At every pressure point of my life, give me the strength to obey, trusting that in finding You, I will truly find myself. Amen.

Have a fruitful day,
